Friends of Lili‘uokalani Gardens will host three Earth Day events this Saturday in partnership with Lions clubs and Rotary clubs.
Semiannual thinning of the tall yellow bamboo patch will begin at 8 a.m. This event is scheduled in advance of the Children’s Day display in order to provide the public with free bamboo poles for koinobori or for other home projects.
People wishing to volunteer should wear closed toe shoes. Eye protection is desirable.
Poles will be available next to the sidewalk along Banyan Drive starting at 9 a.m. People wishing to carry away bamboo poles should bring their own saw and rope for securing to their vehicles.
On the southern corner of the park, Lions clubs will gather at 8 a.m. to renew the stone viewing area at the Lions Legacy Project. Small stones will be removed and cleaned, a base of gravel will be placed on the hillside, then small stones will be replaced.
Other chores for the area include pulling weeds, bagging trash, and power-washing the sidewalk. Please wear gardening clothes, and bring your favorite tools.
Three Rotary clubs in East Hawaii are partnered with Hawaii County and Friends of Lili‘uokalani Gardens to clean Waihonu with enhanced microorganisms. Genki Hou Waihonu will manufacture more genki balls at Kua O Ka La charter school from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. At 4:30 p.m., folks will gather at Lili‘uokalani Gardens to toss genki balls into Waihonu at seven test sites. This will be the third toss.
Genki Hou Waihonu follows the example of Genki Ala Wai in Honolulu, a long-term effort at bioremediation. Hiro Nago, who guides that project, is consulting on the Genki Hou Waihonu project.
Genki balls created on Saturday will be used during the Rotary convention in mid-May.
The theme for Earth Day 2023 is “Invest in Our Planet.” The first Earth Day was held in 1970. By 1990, Earth Day went global. Now, more than one billion people participate each year.
